BMW at this point was bleeding money with no end in sight that was until the introduction of the 2002. In many ways the 2002 could be credited with being the car that helped save BMW especially their presence within the United States Market - and it instantly became a cult-classic. The 2002 cemented the status of BMWs superb-handling and excellent build quality and rolled it up into a package that the masses could afford and enjoy. The 2002 established BMW's reputation in the US and paved the way for larger more luxurious six-cylinder sedans and coupes and served as the blueprint for the 3-series which remains the benchmark to which all other sports sedans are measured. The 2002 is powered by a 2-0 Liter 8 Valve I-4 which drives the rear wheels via a 4-speed transmission and is an excellent example of what the car originally stood for from when it rolled off the assembly line in 1972 - a driver's car. BMW's legendary M10 is one of the greatest four-cylinder engines of all time.
